Bench Tops

Your kitchen bench tops is where all the important work happens in the kitchen.  There are a variety of bench top choices available.  Choice comes down to personal preference and budget.

Size;  For bench tops that are located against a wall, the maximum depth should be approxiamately 650mm.  Any deeper and you won't be able to reach across it to clean.  This doesn't apply to island bench tops as they can be reached from both sides. Length is usually decided by the size of your kitchen.

Edges;  Bench tops edges can be wooden, bevelled, bull nosed, round nosed and half round.  Edge choose is usually determined by the bench top material.  If you have young children opt for rounder varieties as they tend to be more forgiven on young heads.

Cost;  Costs can vary significantly between the different bench top material.  Your budget usually determines your material choice.

Types of Bench Top Material

Stone;  Hardest bench top material available.  Heat resistant.  Difficult to scratch.  Extensive colour range.  The porous nature of stone means is requires regular resealing.

Engineered Stone;  A combinations of stone granule, marble dust or glass particles and resin or polyester.  Like stone, engineered stone is stain, heat and scratch resistant.  Unlike stone it does not required regular resealing.
